Former Member of Parliament for Ododiodio, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has said the government is exercising fiscal discipline by adjusting expenditure to match available resources.

He said budgets are projections that may change depending on economic conditions and argued that responsible governments must review spending when revenue targets are not achieved.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Thursday, July 23, the former lawmaker said the National Democratic Congress administration has been avoiding reckless spending and ensured that expenditure aligns with actual revenue performance.

“It is only a prudent government that says that I want to do this, projects to do this, proposes to do this, and then when its revenue targets are not met, as Fuseni is saying, cut down because the wise men say you cut your coat according to the size of your cloth,” said the former MP.

The former lawmaker said failure to adjust spending in the face of revenue shortfalls could have resulted in financial difficulties and stalled projects.

He cited projects such as the Suame Interchange, Keta Market Phase Two and other infrastructure developments as examples of initiatives affected by funding challenges after previous economic decisions.

“You cannot be in government, and then even when your projections are not being met, you recklessly go ahead to do,” he stated.

He emphasised that effective economic management requires balancing development commitments with available resources to ensure sustainable progress.
