Ghana to Champion Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at UN’s CSW70

Ghana is set to champion the cause of gender equality and women’s empowerment on the global stage, as a high-level delegation, led by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, participates in the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Running from March 1 to March 12, 2026, the pivotal session is themed “Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.” Ghana’s proactive involvement underscores its unwavering dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable society, both domestically and internationally.
The Ghanaian delegation will engage extensively in critical discussions, high-level dialogues, and strategic partnerships, actively contributing to global efforts to advance gender equality. Their participation will serve as a platform to showcase Ghana’s significant strides, highlight persistent challenges, and reaffirm its commitments towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 on gender equality. Through bilateral meetings and side events, Ghana aims to share its innovative approaches and best practices, inspiring collaborative action and fostering a deeper understanding of effective strategies for women’s empowerment.
A cornerstone of Ghana’s advocacy at CSW70 will be the comprehensive approach to women’s economic empowerment and institutional strengthening. The delegation will highlight initiatives designed to alleviate poverty among women, vigorously promote women’s entrepreneurship, and ensure equitable access to vital economic resources. Furthermore, Ghana will articulate its efforts in building robust institutional frameworks, enacting crucial legal reforms, and implementing policy mechanisms that not only support gender equality but also rigorously protect women’s rights. The nation will also champion increased investment in gender equality programs, advocating for gender-responsive budgeting and exploring innovative financing solutions to bolster women’s empowerment initiatives.
Beyond economic and institutional reforms, Ghana is set to underscore its unwavering commitment to combating violence against women and girls, sharing its multi-faceted strategies and interventions to prevent and respond to all forms of abuse, including domestic violence, sexual assault, and harmful practices. Moreover, a key focus will be on promoting women’s leadership and participation across all sectors. The delegation will discuss progressive measures to enhance women’s representation in decision-making processes within politics, public life, and the private sector, emphasizing the invaluable contributions women make to national development and democratic governance.
Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu is slated to deliver a national statement, a powerful testament outlining Ghana’s progress, priorities, and future commitments in advancing gender equality. The statement will spotlight the nation’s innovative approaches that directly address the overarching theme of CSW70. Comprising officials from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, other government agencies, civil society organizations, and passionate women’s rights advocates, the diverse Ghanaian delegation exemplifies a collective national resolve. Ghana eagerly anticipates a productive engagement, poised to significantly contribute to the global momentum towards accelerating gender equality and empowerment for all women and girls worldwide.
