On March 5, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama officially commissioned the world’s largest calcined clay cement plant at the Tema Free Zones Enclave. Developed by CBI Ghana Limited, the $110 million facility boasts an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of environmentally friendly cement.

The plant employs innovative limestone calcined clay technology, which cuts carbon emissions by up to 40 percent compared to traditional Portland cement production while preserving the necessary strength for construction projects. This advancement supports global efforts to decarbonize the cement industry and reduces Ghana’s reliance on imported clinker.

President Mahama described the project as a key milestone in Ghana’s industrial revival and sustainable manufacturing push. It aligns closely with his administration’s 24-hour economy policy, aimed at elevating manufacturing’s contribution to GDP toward 15 percent and generating substantial job opportunities.

The commissioning ceremony highlighted the facility’s role in advancing green industrialization, positioning Ghana as a leader in low-carbon building materials across Africa.

The state-of-the-art plant strengthens local cement supply chains and demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
