Former Hearts of Oak Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Harry Zakour has expressed concern over the declining standard of the Ghana Premier League in recent years.

The Ghanaian topflight has struggled to maintain its competitiveness, with several of the country’s top players leaving to join clubs in other African leagues.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Zakour said the decline in the quality of the league is evident, although he acknowledged that the game has changed over the years.

“The standard of the Ghana Premier League has dropped. I know times have changed, but the drop in the Premier League is obvious,” he said.

Zakour also compared the current administration under Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku with the tenure of former GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi.

“Kwesi Nyantakyi was good, but I’ll not write off Kurt Okraku; things have changed. No condition is permanent,” he added.

Zakour is widely remembered for his successful tenure at Hearts of Oak, during which the club enjoyed domestic dominance and won the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on September 5, with clubs hoping to deliver a more competitive campaign.
