Ghana: EPA Busts 1070 Chanfang Machines in Intelligence Led Operation at Tema Port

Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority has achieved a significant victory in the fight against illegal small scale gold mining known as galamsey. On the night of March 3 2026 the agency intercepted 1070 Chanfang machines concealed inside separate shipping containers at Tema Port.
This operation stemmed from joint intelligence efforts targeting the network supplying equipment that devastates the nation’s water bodies. Chanfang machines powerful water pumps frequently used to dredge rivers and streams for gold have become a symbol of environmental harm in Ghana. Their widespread deployment in galamsey sites leads to severe pollution sedimentation and destruction of aquatic ecosystems.
The latest seizure builds on an earlier success in February 2026 when authorities discovered more than 200 similar machines hidden in 14 containers at the same port. Officials suspect these imports form part of a coordinated effort to equip mining operations across various districts despite existing bans and restrictions on such equipment.
The Environmental Protection Authority emphasized that this action forms part of intensified surveillance at entry points to prevent further influx of tools linked to illegal mining. By disrupting supply chains the agency aims to weaken the operations that continue to threaten rivers forests and community water sources.
Public response has highlighted both support for stronger enforcement and calls for deeper investigations into importers and facilitators. Many citizens view these interceptions as crucial steps toward protecting Ghana’s natural resources from ongoing degradation.
This development underscores the government’s renewed commitment to combating galamsey through proactive measures at borders and beyond.
