On March 11, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana held productive bilateral talks with President Lee Jae Myung of the Republic of Korea in Seoul. The meeting reinforced the longstanding and warm partnership between the two nations, built on shared democratic values, respect for human rights, and close collaboration in international forums such as the United Nations.

The highlight of the discussions came with the signing of three important Memoranda of Understanding. These agreements focus on maritime security, cooperation to address climate change, and advancement in digital technology. The deals promise to enhance Ghana’s naval capabilities and coastal protection, support joint efforts against environmental challenges, and accelerate digital innovation to drive economic progress.

President Mahama emphasized the deep historical ties and common principles that unite Ghana and Korea. He pointed to successful agriculture programs backed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, which have helped increase rice production and strengthen food security in Ghana. He also highlighted Ghana’s central position in the African Continental Free Trade Area, with its secretariat based in Accra, offering Korean businesses an ideal gateway to the vast African market of more than 1.4 billion people.

In response, President Lee Jae Myung expressed admiration for Ghana and recalled the special affection many Koreans feel toward the country, partly due to the popular “Ghana” chocolate brand made from Ghanaian cocoa that has delighted consumers in Korea for over fifty years. Both leaders voiced strong optimism that combining Ghana’s abundant natural and human resources with Korea’s renowned technological expertise will create lasting mutual benefits and promote sustainable development.

The visit underscores a forward looking partnership that extends beyond government agreements to include greater people to people exchanges, cultural connections, and investment opportunities. As Ghana and Korea deepen these ties, the collaboration is set to deliver tangible gains for citizens in both countries.
