GFA moves to curb match-fixing with ban on betting odds for domestic matches
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has intensified its efforts to combat match-fixing by prohibiting betting companies from offering odds on domestic football matches.
Speaking at the GFA’s 32nd Ordinary Congress in Prampram on Thursday, President Kurt Okraku announced that no betting company has been granted permission to place odds on local games as part of measures aimed at safeguarding the integrity of Ghanaian football.
“No betting company has been licensed to place odds on domestic games,” Okraku told delegates.
The decision comes amid increasing concerns about the influence of betting-related activities on football competitions worldwide, with match-fixing continuing to pose a significant threat to the credibility of the sport.
According to the GFA, restricting betting opportunities on domestic matches is intended to reduce the risk of individuals attempting to manipulate results for financial gain.
Football authorities across the globe have stepped up efforts to tackle match-fixing in recent years, with players, officials and other stakeholders frequently coming under investigation over alleged involvement in betting-related misconduct.
The GFA believes the latest measure will help strengthen confidence in the Ghana Premier League and create a more transparent environment for clubs, players, coaches, match officials and supporters.
The Association has also stressed that protecting the integrity of domestic competitions remains central to its broader strategy of enhancing the commercial appeal and international standing of Ghanaian football.
The ban is expected to form part of a wider package of integrity measures as the GFA seeks to preserve the credibility of its competitions ahead of the new season.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on 5 September.
