Turkish Super Lig side Gençlerbirliği and Nigeria international Henry Onyekuru have decided to go separate ways.

The Ankara-based club confirmed a mutual termination of the 29-year-old winger’s deal ahead of the new campaign.

Talks between the club and Onyekuru’s representatives led to an agreement that brings his time with the Red and Blacks to an early end. To settle the exit, Gençlerbirliği will pay the Super Eagles forward a total of about €940,000.

That figure covers €240,000 in unpaid wages from the 2025/2026 season, plus €700,000 as compensation for the year left on his contract. The payments are set to be spread across six months.

It marks a big saving for Gençlerbirliği, because Onyekuru was due to earn around €1.6m in salary for the coming season before the deal was ripped up.

The tricky winger only arrived in the Turkish capital last summer on a free transfer after his spell with Saudi Pro League team Al-Fayha came to an end.

During his one season in Ankara, he featured 17 times in the league but struggled to nail down a consistent starting spot.

With the transfer window still open, Onyekuru will now be free to assess his options. At 29, he still offers pace and experience on the flank, and several clubs across Europe and the Middle East could show interest.

For Gençlerbirliği, the move clears space in the wage bill as they reshape the squad for a fresh push in the Super Lig.
