Frank Lampard hails Caleb Yirenkyi after impressive Coventry City debut

SAT, 15 AUG 2026

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has expressed his delight with the arrival of Ghana international midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, following an impressive first appearance for the club.

Yirenkyi marked his Coventry City debut with an assist as Lampard’s side secured a 2-0 victory over AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly, offering an early glimpse of what the Ghanaian could bring to the team.

The 20-year-old recently joined Coventry from Danish club FC Nordsjaelland for a club-record fee of $30 million after attracting significant attention with his performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lampard revealed that Coventry were eager to secure Yirenkyi’s signature despite competition from several clubs across Europe, and believes the midfielder has the potential to develop into a key player for the club.

“We’ve got a belief in Caleb here. He’s a player that we’re happy to have brought to the club because he was well wanted by many clubs probably around Europe. We sold the project to him,” Lampard said to the club media.

“He’s a good, talented player; he’s young. This boy, we believe, is going to really build his career so [he’s] a big addition to the club. I think we saw signs of that; hopefully we see a lot more,” he added.

Yirenkyi’s arrival has generated considerable excitement at Coventry, with the club investing heavily in the young Ghanaian as part of its plans for the new campaign.

Having already made an encouraging start, the midfielder is expected to be involved when Coventry City begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal on Friday night.

The fixture will provide Yirenkyi with another opportunity to showcase his ability as he begins what Coventry hope will be a successful spell in England.
