Nigeria’s Flying Eagles secured a place in the final of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship after overcoming hosts Ivory Coast 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra time.

The semi-final began with Ivory Coast taking control of proceedings, creating several early chances and eventually finding the breakthrough in the 17th minute.

Goalkeeper Clinton Lawani kept Nigeria in the contest with a series of impressive saves, but he was eventually beaten as the hosts deservedly took the lead before halftime.

Nigeria emerged with greater determination after the break and gradually grew into the game. Their persistence paid off in the 67th minute when captain Habila Simeon rose highest to head home the equaliser from a long throw, restoring hope for the Flying Eagles.

The momentum shifted in extra time as Aliyu Abubakar gave Nigeria the advantage with a well-placed header just minutes after the restart.

However, the Ivorians refused to surrender and capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the score once again, forcing the encounter into a penalty shootout.

With a place in the final at stake, Lawani proved to be Nigeria’s hero. The goalkeeper produced two crucial saves during the shootout as the Flying Eagles held their nerve to claim a 4-3 victory on penalties.

The hard-fought triumph sends Nigeria into the tournament final, where they will aim to defend their regional title and continue their impressive run.

The result also strengthens the team’s confidence as they prepare for the next stage of youth football on the continent, with qualification ambitions and another trophy now firmly within reach.
