By Okiki Oluwasegun

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, wrapped up the latest phase of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African qualifiers in impressive style after defeating Rwanda 106-62 in their final Group C encounter.

The commanding victory completed a flawless qualifying window for the Nigerian side, who secured three wins from three matches after earlier overcoming Tunisia and Guinea.

The performance highlighted the team’s growing confidence and determination as they continue their push for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Point guard Uche Iroegbu was among the standout performers, recording 17 points and seven assists to guide the team. Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and veteran forward Stan Okoye also made significant contributions, each finishing with 13 points in a well-balanced offensive display.

Nigeria began the qualifying window with an 84-81 victory over Tunisia before producing a dramatic comeback to edge Guinea 80-79 in their second game.

Agada led the scoring in that contest with 22 points, while Iroegbu and Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu also delivered important performances to help the team recover from a late deficit.

Against Rwanda, D’Tigers controlled the game from start to finish, displaying strong teamwork, disciplined defence and efficient shooting on both ends of the court.

The unbeaten run has boosted Nigeria’s chances of reaching the next stage of qualification and restored belief within the squad.

D’Tigers will now prepare for the second phase of the African qualifiers, where tougher opponents await in the battle for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
