Court Sentences Farmer To Death By Hanging For Killing Teenager In Ankpa
Justice A.U. Muhammed of the Kogi State High Court of Justice, sitting at Ankpa, has convicted and sentenced one Isiaka Alfa, also known as Ayegba, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
The judgment was delivered on 30th June, 2026.
Isiaka Alfa of Odogomu, Ankpa, was convicted for the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death, contrary to Section 221 of the Kogi State Penal Code Law, 2019.
Prosecuting Counsel, Barr. Matthew Akubo, led evidence to establish that on 28th December, 2023, the deceased, Alih Haruna, and his two brothers had gone to their family farm to set traps for bush animals.
The court heard that the convict, who is a farmland boundary neighbour to the father of the deceased, accosted the three boys on the farm and chased them with a locally made gun. While the boys were fleeing, he shot at them, killing Alih Haruna instantly. Alih, who was running behind his two brothers, was hit and died on the spot.
At the close of trial, after evaluating the evidence of both the prosecution and the defence, Hon. Justice Muhammed found the defendant guilty as charged and accordingly sentenced him to death by hanging.
Reacting to the judgment, the Senior Legal Officer for the State and prosecuting counsel, Matthew Akubo, Esq., commended the court for the well-considered judgment, dedicating the victory to the late Alih Haruna and to all victims of crime in Nigeria.
On his part, defence counsel, B.A. Ali, Esq., appreciated the court for its industry and time invested in delivering the judgment.
The convict was thereafter reminded of his constitutional right of appeal within the time allowed by law.
