Emiliano Martinez

Chelsea are weighing up a potential move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after being presented with the opportunity by intermediaries, following Robert Sanchez’s difficult display against Fulham.

The Blues had maintained throughout the summer that they were satisfied with their goalkeeping options, with Sanchez expected to remain their main choice and Mike Penders providing competition.

However, that position could now be changing after Sanchez committed two costly mistakes during Chelsea’s 3-2 Premier League victory over Fulham.

Martinez has reportedly been made available to Chelsea as he looks for a new challenge.

The Argentina international is said to be open to joining the London club after his proposed transfer to Juventus fell through.

A move to Chelsea could also suit Aston Villa, who have brought in Zion Suzuki and are preparing for life without Martinez as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Villa had previously valued the 33-year-old at around £8.5 million when negotiating with Juventus.

Chelsea are now considering whether to take advantage of the situation, although no final decision has been made.

The possible move comes as Chelsea continue to reshape their squad before the transfer window closes.

The club are also expected to sanction several departures, with Nicolas Jackson among the players attracting interest.

A decision on Martinez could therefore depend on Chelsea’s assessment of Sanchez and whether they believe strengthening the goalkeeping position has become an immediate priority
