Chelsea Held to 3-3 Draw by Johor Darul Ta’zim in Pre-Season Thriller

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Chelsea ended their pre-season tour with an entertaining 3-3 draw against Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

The Blues fell behind early when Arif Aiman converted a close-range opportunity in the 14th minute. Chelsea responded before halftime, with Liam Delap calmly converting a penalty to restore parity.

Delap proved to be Chelsea’s main attacking threat after the break. The striker won another penalty after Jamie Gittens was brought down and made no mistake from the spot, putting Xabi Alonso’s side ahead for the first time.

Johor Darul Ta’zim refused to surrender, however. Oscar Arribas’ free-kick took a deflection and wrong-footed Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, bringing the Malaysian side level at 2-2.

The hosts then looked set to claim victory when Bergson found the net in the 86th minute with a well-placed effort from outside the box.

Chelsea responded in dramatic fashion. Substitute Mykhailo Mudryk created danger from the left before sending a cross into the area.

Although Delap could not make contact, the ball struck Johor defender Cristian Glauder and ended up in the net, giving Chelsea a late equaliser.

The result brought an action-packed end to Chelsea’s Asian tour. Alonso’s team will now return to England to continue preparations for the new campaign.

Chelsea’s final pre-season test is scheduled for August 15, when they host Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge.
