Charlton Secure Season-Long Loan Deal for Nigerian Goalkeeper Okonkwo
Championship outfit Charlton Athletic have strengthened their goalkeeping department by bringing in Nigeria international Arthur Okonkwo on a temporary basis from Wrexham for the entirety of the upcoming campaign.
The club made the announcement official through their website on Thursday, confirming the towering 6ft 6in shot-stopper as their latest summer addition.
Okonkwo becomes the eighth new face to arrive at The Valley this offseason, joining a group that already includes Ivan Mesík, Billy Koumetio, Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Nathaniel Chalobah, and Timothy Ouma.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Okonkwo expressed enthusiasm about the new chapter, noting his eagerness to contribute and grow as a player under his new manager’s guidance.
He also praised how warmly the squad had received him during his introduction to the group.
Okonkwo’s footballing journey began at Arsenal, where he was born locally in Camden and worked his way through the youth system before putting pen to paper on his first professional deal in 2021.
His development continued through loan stints at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz, where he claimed domestic cup honors, before a temporary switch to Wrexham eventually became permanent in mid-2024 following the Welsh club’s promotion push.
At Wrexham, Okonkwo played a key role in back-to-back promotions, including a runner-up finish during the 2024/25 season, though the Red Dragons fell just short of a play-off spot in the following campaign.
He’s also earned two senior caps for Nigeria, debuting during this summer’s triumphant Unity Cup run.
