Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations have suffered a major setback after the Flying Eagles were beaten 4-1 by Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.

The decisive match was played on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, where Burkina Faso produced another strong performance against Nigeria to lift the regional trophy.

The result also means Nigeria will not participate in the 2027 U-20 AFCON and will consequently miss out on the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan.

Burkina Faso had already shown their strength earlier in the tournament when they defeated Nigeria 2-0 during the group stage.

They repeated that success in the final, completing a double over the Flying Eagles and securing their place among WAFU Zone B’s representatives for next year’s continental competition.

Nigeria’s afternoon quickly turned into a difficult one as Burkina Faso raced into a commanding position by scoring three times within the opening 15 minutes. The early goals left the Flying Eagles with a huge deficit to overcome.

Nigeria eventually responded after the break, converting a penalty to reduce the gap and briefly raise hopes of a comeback.

However, Burkina Faso remained in control and added another goal late in the match to put the result beyond doubt.

The defeat also ended Nigeria’s bid to retain the WAFU Zone B title they won in Lomé in October 2024.

Burkina Faso’s recent record against Nigeria has also been impressive. The Young Stallions defeated the Flying Eagles 1-0 during the 2024 WAFU Zone B tournament in Lomé, while their previous meeting in Niger Republic in 2022 ended in a 2-2 draw.

With Burkina Faso and hosts Ghana taking the two available WAFU Zone B spots, Nigeria will now have to wait for another opportunity to return to the continental U-20 stage.
