Bournemouth have strengthened their defensive options by completing the signing of Portuguese centre-back Antonio Silva from Benfica in a deal reportedly worth up to £25.7 million.

The highly-rated defender arrives with a reputation as one of Portugal’s brightest young talents and is expected to play a key role in the club’s plans for the new Premier League season.

Silva joins the Cherries following the departure of Marcos Senesi, filling a vacancy at the heart of defence with a player who combines technical quality, composure on the ball and considerable top-level experience despite being just 22 years old.

The Portugal international leaves Benfica after an impressive spell in Lisbon, where he established himself as a first-team regular.
