Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has moved to calm concerns over Bruno Guimarães after the Brazilian midfielder sat out Friday’s 3-0 victory over Coventry City with a groin issue.

Guimarães first showed signs of discomfort during last weekend’s Community Shield win over Manchester City, where he was seen icing his right leg after being substituted.

The knock kept him out of Arsenal’s Premier League title-defense opener at the Emirates, but Arteta was quick to dismiss suggestions that his £75 million summer signing from Newcastle could face an extended absence.

“We expect that not to be weeks at all,” Arteta told reporters, adding that Guimarães himself had been reluctant to come off.

“He didn’t even want to stop. He wanted to carry on.” The manager said he’s still learning more about his new midfielder’s mentality but isn’t treating the injury as a major concern.

Arsenal didn’t miss him against Coventry, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Ødegaard all finding the net in a comfortable win.

Arteta also singled out another new arrival, winger Christos Tzolis, who impressed on his home debut following a £34 million switch from Club Brugge.

Tzolis played a part in both of Arsenal’s opening goals before being withdrawn to a standing ovation in the 76th minute a display Arteta called “phenomenal.”
