Amaju Pinnick Supports Infantino’s World Cup Funding Proposal

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has thrown his support behind FIFA’s proposed commercial investment initiative, describing it as a potential game-changer for football development, particularly in emerging football nations.

The proposal, championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, seeks to create a new commercial structure that would attract private investment into some of football’s biggest competitions.

While the plan has generated debate in several parts of the football world, Pinnick believes it presents a valuable opportunity for member associations to become more financially independent.

Speaking on the issue, the former FIFA Council member argued that increased funding would reduce the heavy reliance many football federations place on government support.

According to him, consistent financial backing would enable associations to invest more in grassroots development, infrastructure, youth programmes, and national teams without facing recurring funding challenges.

Pinnick noted that many smaller football associations struggle to finance their activities, often depending on external assistance to honour international fixtures and developmental programmes.

He believes the proposed investment model could provide the resources needed to strengthen football administration across different countries.

However, he also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in managing any funds generated through the initiative.

Proper oversight, he said, would be essential to ensure that the money is invested directly into football development rather than being mismanaged.

The proposal is expected to be considered by FIFA’s member associations in the coming weeks, with football stakeholders across various confederations closely monitoring discussions.

While opinions remain divided, supporters argue that the initiative could unlock greater financial opportunities and accelerate the growth of the game worldwide.
