Amadu Mohammed secures bronze as Ghanas medal tally grows at Commonwealth Games

Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed has claimed a bronze medal in the men’s 55kg boxing event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after falling in the semi-finals in Glasgow on Friday, July 31.

The reigning African Games champion’s quest for a place in the final ended following a hard-fought 4-1 split decision defeat to Australia’s Dixon Jye.

Amadu made an impressive start to the contest, taking control of the opening round with an assured display. His performance earned a unanimous 10-9 score from all five judges, putting him in an early advantage.

However, Jye responded strongly in the second round, turning the tide of the contest. Four of the five judges scored the round in favour of the Australian, leaving Amadu with work to do heading into the decisive final round.

The Australian maintained his momentum in the closing stages, producing another composed performance to edge the contest.

Although Amadu finished strongly and landed several clean punches in the final exchanges, all five judges awarded the third round to Jye, confirming his progression to the gold medal match.

Despite missing out on the final, Amadu leaves Glasgow with a bronze medal, as Commonwealth Games boxing regulations award bronze to both losing semi-finalists.

His podium finish marks Ghana’s second medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games after para-athlete Zinabu Issah captured silver in the women’s F57 shot put. The result also boosts Team Ghana’s medal count as the competition approaches its conclusion.
