The American Human Rights Council (AHRC) joins the WEL Coalition for Advocacy Day at the Michigan State Capitol — the Affordable Water Now Day of Action — on September 23, 2026.

AHRC urges community members, partners, and supporters to register and stand united in affirming a simple, universal truth: water is life. It is essential to human survival, human dignity, and public health. It is a basic human right, not a privilege.

AHRC stressed that no family in Michigan should ever face shutoffs, unaffordable rates, or unsafe water conditions. Water is indispensable for health, sanitation, stability, and dignity. Access to safe, affordable water must be guaranteed for every household, regardless of income or ZIP code.

The Day of Action will bring together advocates from across the state to meet with legislators, share lived experiences and highlight the urgent need for the Affordable Water Now legislative package. AHRC emphasized that personal stories and community voices are critical to advancing policies that protect Michigan families.

Participants will meet with lawmakers and staff throughout the day, offering firsthand accounts of how the water affordability crisis affects communities. AHRC noted that these conversations are essential to building legislative understanding and driving meaningful reform.

AHRC calls on partner organizations, volunteers, and community networks to help amplify this message. Whether attending for the first time or returning as a seasoned advocate, every participant plays a vital role. Each conversation, each shared story, and each person who shows up moves Michigan closer to establishing a statewide water affordability program that protects every family.

“No person should ever be denied access to water, for water is life. Ensuring access to safe, clean, and affordable water is both a moral imperative and a practical necessity,” said Imam Steve Elturk, IONA & Founding AHRC Board Member. “Water is a God‑given blessing, a fundamental human right, and it must be accessible to every person, regardless of income or socio‑economic status,” continued Imam Elturk.

“The more voices we bring to Lansing, the stronger our collective call becomes,” said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “Water is not optional. It is not a luxury. It is a human right, and Michigan’s laws must reflect that reality,” continued Hamad.
