A group of aggrieved candidates contesting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Yendi Constituency Executive Elections has threatened to seek legal redress if the party fails to lift the suspension of the electoral process and announce a new date for the polls.

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 19, the candidates described the continued suspension of the elections as unlawful, arguing that it breaches the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness.

According to the group, the constituency reorganisation process had progressed smoothly through the nomination and filing stages and had reached the final vetting phase when concerns were raised over the alleged removal of the names of some polling station executives from the constituency album.

The candidates claimed that videos circulating on social media created the impression that the electoral process in Yendi had collapsed completely, alleging that the development was being used by some individuals to frustrate the elections and undermine reconciliation efforts within the party.

They accused the National Executive Council (NEC) of acting prematurely by suspending the process without first receiving a comprehensive report from the party’s representative who supervised the vetting exercise.

The group further alleged that no formal investigation had been conducted into the matter and that affected persons had not been given the opportunity to present their side of the case before or after the suspension.

The candidates said they had exhausted internal mechanisms to resolve the issue, including engagements with the party’s national representative, the constituency chairman, the Council of Elders, and the submission of a formal petition to the party’s leadership.

They expressed concern over what they described as attempts by some individuals to assume powers beyond those provided under the party’s constitution, warning that such actions could undermine the NPP’s democratic values and internal governance structures.

The candidates also rejected any move to extend the tenure of the current constituency executives, insisting that the concerns that led to the suspension had already been resolved through interventions by the constituency chairman and other stakeholders.

They are demanding that the NEC immediately reactivate the electoral process, restore the names of affected delegates in the constituency album, and complete the final register by July 21, 2026.

The group further called on the party to schedule the Yendi Constituency Executive Elections for July 31, 2026, to allow newly elected executives to participate in the upcoming Regional and National Delegates’ Conferences and Elections.

“Should these reasonable demands not be met, we shall have no option but to seek legal redress. Among the reliefs we intend to seek are orders compelling the Party to conduct the Yendi Constituency Executive Elections, restraining the current Constituency Executives from continuing in office beyond their mandate, preventing them from participating in Regional and National elections in that capacity, and taking all necessary legal steps to safeguard the democratic rights of the delegates of the Yendi Constituency. Nevertheless, litigation remains our last resort. Our preferred path is an amicable internal resolution,” they stated.
