The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the display of the personal particulars and academic credentials of presidential candidates for the 2027 general election as documents submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are now in public.

The exercise began on Saturday in compliance with Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which require the electoral body to publish the credentials, affidavits and personal particulars of candidates sponsored by political parties within 21 days of receiving their nominations.

Documents contained in Tinubu’s Form EC9 included his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, which his transcript showed was awarded “with honours” on June 22, 1979.

The President also submitted his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, indicating that he served in Oyo State between December 1982 and November 1983.

His employment history listed in the nomination form showed that he worked with Mobil Nigeria Limited from 1983 to 1992, leaving the company due to “advancement.” It also reflected his tenure as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, ending with the “legal end of tenure,” before indicating his current service with the Federal Government from 2023 to date.

However, the form listed “0000” as the years of attendance for both his primary and secondary education, while only his university qualification, obtained in 1979, was specified.

Tinubu’s personal details identified his date of birth as March 29, 1952, his age as 74, his place of birth as Lagos, his residential address as No. 4, Queen’s Drive, Ikoyi, and his occupation as “politician.”

Shettima’s submitted documents provided a more detailed educational history, beginning with his Certificate of Primary Education issued by the Ministry of Education of the former North-Eastern State. The certificate showed he attended Lamisula I Primary School between 1972 and 1978, graduating second in a class of 22 pupils, with English, History and Religious Knowledge recorded as his strongest subjects.

His West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result from Government Secondary School, Potiskum, obtained in June 1983, showed he earned six credits and passes, including distinctions in Religious Knowledge and Economics.

The Vice President’s records further indicated that he obtained a Second Class Upper Division degree in Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri in August 1989 before proceeding to the University of Ibadan, where he earned a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics.

His NYSC discharge certificate showed he completed the mandatory national service between October 1989 and October 1990.

In a statement explaining the exercise, INEC said Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.

“Form EC9 contains the credentials, personal particulars and affidavits submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties,’’ the commission stated.

According to the commission’s revised election timetable, campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections will commence on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and state assembly elections will begin at a later date.
