Sergio Busquets Begins Coaching Career at Barcelona
Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets has taken his first major step into coaching after returning to the club where he established himself as one of football’s finest defensive midfielders.
The former Spain international has joined Barça Atlètic, Barcelona’s reserve side, as an assistant coach. He will work alongside head coach Juliano Belletti during the upcoming campaign while continuing his coaching education.
Busquets’ return marks another chapter in a relationship with Barcelona that began when he entered the club’s youth system in 2005.
He later progressed through the reserve team before earning promotion to the senior side, where he became a key figure in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Known for his composure, intelligence and exceptional understanding of the game, Busquets made more than 700 appearances for Barcelona and won numerous major honours during his playing career. His trophy collection included multiple La Liga titles and UEFA Champions League triumphs.
After leaving Barcelona in 2023, Busquets continued his career with Inter Miami, where he reunited with former Barcelona teammates.
He eventually announced his retirement from professional football in 2025.
Now aged 38, the midfielder is beginning a new journey from the touchline. His experience at the highest level could provide valuable guidance to the young players developing at Barça Atlètic.
The coaching role also gives Busquets an opportunity to gain practical experience as he works towards completing his coaching qualifications.
His return to Barcelona is likely to attract considerable attention, particularly among supporters who watched him become one of the club’s most influential midfielders.
