‘Recharged’ Jurgen Klopp says he is ‘ready’ for Germany job as he confirms talks
A ”recharged” Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is in talks to replace Julian Nagelsmann as Germany head coach, but says ”fundamental changes” are needed to improve the nation’s fortunes following their 2026 World Cup round of 32 exit against Paraguay.
Nagelsmann stepped down from his role following Germany’s shock penalty shoot-out defeat to Paraguay.
The result means Germany have not won a knockout game at the World Cup since lifting the trophy in 2014.
Former Liverpool boss Klopp looks set to be the next man tasked with getting Germany back to the top tier, telling Magenta TV: ”I have a full tank and am ready.
“Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down, the DFB [German Football Association] are looking for a successor, and they approached me.
”There will have to be intensive discussions, because the problems we are currently facing are, of course, not down to Julian Nagelsmann alone. Julian is an exceptional coach, and he will prove that many more times throughout his managerial career.
“That is why we simply have to wait and see how those discussions unfold.”
Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 and has been Red Bull’s head of global soccer since January 2025.
According to reports there is a clause in his contract which permits him to leave if the Germany job becomes available.
“The situation is such that I have an existing contract with Red Bull. As a person, I am usually very happy to keep contracts,” added Klopp.
“But I have also said that I am very interested in the discussions.”
Germany’s loss to Paraguay was the first time they have been beaten in a penalty shoot-out at the World Cup.
They started their tournament with a 7-1 hammering of Curacao but were then unimpressive as they edged past Ivory Coast and lost to Ecuador.
Klopp says Germany are facing a ”turning point” and he is ready to take over the reins.
”We now need to fundamentally change things,” he said.
”Whether it will ultimately be me or whoever else it is, that changes nothing about the fact that the changes are necessary.
“The timing, even now, is not perfect because I am currently under contract with Red Bull, but it is still better than it has ever been. When I stopped at Liverpool, I lacked the energy for even one more year with the club, and I’m more than recharged now.”
