Iran’s football team shouldn’t be in World Cup ‘for their life, safety’, Trump warns

President Donald Trump has issued a formal warning regarding the Iranian national football team’s involvement in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Amidst a heightened military standoff between Washington and Tehran, the American leader suggested that the team should prioritize their personal safety by opting out of the tournament.
Writing on Truth Social, Mr. Trump clarified that while the team is technically permitted to enter the United States this June, a boycott might be the most appropriate course of action. He noted that his primary concern remains the life and safety of the players. This statement follows a period of intense diplomatic friction and adds a significant layer of geopolitical tension to the world’s premier sporting event.
The President’s remarks coincide with a firm stance from Tehran. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali recently announced on state television that the national team would not travel to the United States under any circumstances. Mr. Donyamali cited the assassination of Iranian leadership and ongoing regional conflicts as the primary reasons for the withdrawal.
Despite previous assurances from the White House that the athletes would be welcome, the Iranian ministry remains unmoved. The Sports Minister characterized the current environment as fundamentally unsafe for Iranian citizens. He pointed to the loss of thousands of lives in recent months and the broader hostilities involving Israel and the United States as evidence that participation is impossible. This escalating rhetoric suggests that one of Asia’s top footballing nations will remain absent from the global stage when the competition begins this summer.
