Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has welcomed the Supreme Court’s landmark decision declaring the delegate system used by political parties to elect presidential and parliamentary candidates unconstitutional, describing the ruling as a major boost for Ghana’s democratic development.

A plaintiff in the case challenging the delegate-based electoral process, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said the judgment would help restore meritocracy in politics by ensuring that party members, rather than a select few delegates, determine who leads them.

In a 5-2 majority decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the delegate system employed by political parties was inconsistent with democratic principles. The court subsequently directed all political parties to reform their internal electoral processes within one year to enable all registered members in good standing to participate in the selection of parliamentary and presidential candidates.

The ruling effectively ends the exclusive use of delegates in choosing candidates and requires political parties to adopt more inclusive systems that broaden participation among their membership.

Reacting to the judgment in an interview with Citi News, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe described the verdict as a victory for democracy and a step toward strengthening internal party governance.

“The Supreme Court decision is indeed a good decision for democracy. If democracy must continue, then it must be merit-based. Otherwise, it has no meaning,” he said.

He noted that the judgment reinforces the importance of giving ordinary party members a direct voice in deciding who represents them, rather than limiting that responsibility to a small group of delegates.

According to him, political parties should take the ruling as an opportunity to reform their internal structures and align them with democratic values.

“I believe strongly political parties are going to learn a lesson from this, and they should know that the will of the people can never be changed,” he stated.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe further argued that political leadership should be earned through competence, integrity and the confidence of party members, rather than financial influence.

“You cannot buy your way to office. That is untenable,” he added.
