World Cup 2026: Reece James Set to Return for England’s Quarter-Final Against Norway
England have received encouraging news ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final after defender Reece James moved closer to making his return from injury.
The Chelsea full-back has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring problem during England’s group-stage victory over Ghana.
The injury forced him to miss the Three Lions’ subsequent matches against Panama, DR Congo and Mexico.
However, England boss Thomas Tuchel is optimistic that James will be fit enough to feature against Norway this weekend after making good progress in his recovery. The experienced defender is expected to rejoin full training before the crucial encounter.
James’ return would provide a timely solution for Tuchel, whose defensive options have been stretched following Jarell Quansah’s suspension.
The young defender was sent off during England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16, ruling him out of the quarter-final clash.
Throughout the tournament, England have been forced to rotate several players at right-back due to injuries and suspensions. Ezri Konsa, John Stones, Djed Spence and even midfielder Declan Rice have all been used in the position, while Tino Livramento missed the competition through injury.
Having a fully fit James available would strengthen England’s backline as they prepare to face Norway for a place in the semi-finals.
The Three Lions will hope the return of one of their most experienced defenders can improve their chances of progressing further in the tournament as they continue their quest to lift the World Cup trophy.
