World Cup 2026: De La Fuente Sets New Coaching Record as Spain Reach Final
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has etched his name into the history books after leading La Roja to a convincing 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Spanish side produced another composed display as Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro found the net to seal a place in the tournament’s final. It is Spain’s first appearance in a World Cup final since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
The triumph also marked a remarkable personal achievement for De la Fuente. The 65-year-old has now gone unbeaten in his first 14 matches at major international tournaments, recording 13 victories and one draw across the UEFA European Championship and the FIFA World Cup. No other coach managing a European national team has reached that milestone.
Spain’s impressive run began during their victorious Euro 2024 campaign, where they won every match, and has continued into the ongoing World Cup, underlining the consistency De la Fuente has brought to the national team.
The experienced coach has transformed Spain into one of the tournament’s most disciplined and effective sides, combining defensive stability with an attacking approach that has delivered results against some of the world’s strongest teams.
Before taking charge of the senior national team in 2022, De la Fuente enjoyed considerable success with Spain’s youth teams, winning both the Under-19 and Under-21 European Championships while also guiding the Olympic team to a silver medal.
With the historic record already secured, De la Fuente will now look to crown Spain’s outstanding campaign by lifting the World Cup trophy when they face either Argentina or England in the final.
