Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has insisted that residents of the state will not be intimidated ahead of the August 15 governorship election, following the arrest of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Teslim Igbalaiye, and five others over alleged electoral offences.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, Adeleke, who is Accord Party governorship candidate, said the people of Osun had a long-standing tradition of resisting oppression and would ensure that their votes determined the outcome of the election.

He expressed confidence that no external pressure or intimidation would undermine the democratic choice of the electorate.

“Throughout the history of Osun State, our people have never bowed to intimidation. We are resilient, determined, and fiercely protective of our rights,” the governor wrote.

“As we approach the August 15 governorship election, I have absolute confidence that no amount of external interference or intimidation can override the collective will of the people of Osun State. The verdict of the people will prevail.’’

Adeleke also claimed that independent opinion polls indicated a clear victory for the Accord Party, attributing the projected outcome to his administration’s performance in key sectors.

According to him, his government has made significant strides in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare and pension reforms.

“Independent polls consistently point to a clear and decisive victory for Accord Party because the people can see and feel the impact of our administration. From infrastructure and education to healthcare, workers’ welfare, and pension reforms, our record speaks for itself.

“By the grace of God and with the continued support of the good people of Osun, our second term will build on these achievements and deliver even greater progress for every community. The best days of Osun are still ahead.

“Let’s remain united and vigilant. Vote Accord and be prepared to defend your votes,” he added.

The governor’s remarks come amid rising political tension in the state after the Osun State Police Command arrested Igbalaiye and five other suspects over alleged involvement in electoral malpractice.

According to the police, the suspects were apprehended during a raid on the SSG’s residence in Osogbo, where officers reportedly recovered N4.81 million in cash, two Permanent Voter Cards, a voter register and other materials suspected to be connected to vote-buying and related electoral offences.

The command said the operation followed credible intelligence and stressed that investigations into the allegations were ongoing.
