Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says Ghana are determined to go all the way and win the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament.

Ghana’s senior women’s national team will begin their campaign on Wednesday against debutants Cape Verde at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with the Swedish coach outlining the team’s ambitions ahead of the competition.

Björkegren revealed that the Black Queens have set three major objectives for the tournament: advancing from the group stage, securing a semi-final berth to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and ultimately lifting the WAFCON trophy.

“We have three targets: qualify from the group stage, win the quarter-finals to qualify for the World Cup and go all the way to win the 2026 WAFCON,” he told the media on Tuesday.

The Black Queens head into the continental championship with renewed confidence following a productive preparation period in Morocco.

The team ended their pre-tournament build-up on a positive note after recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Malawi in a friendly encounter, a result that has further strengthened belief within the squad.

Ghana secured a bronze medal at the previous edition of the WAFCON and are now aiming to surpass that feat by mounting a serious challenge for their first-ever continental title.

Björkegren, who took charge of a team that had struggled to compete consistently at the highest level, believes the progress made so far has been encouraging.

“We were happy with the bronze medal in the previous WAFCON. I think we did really well. When I came in, I took over a team that normally hadn’t performed really well in a long time.”

After their opening fixture against Cape Verde, Ghana will face Cameroon on Saturday, August 2, before concluding their Group A matches against Mali on August 6.

The four teams that advance to the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFCON will secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
