The United States government has condemned the killing of nine members of the family of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo in Plateau State, describing the attack as horrific and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the United States Mission in Nigeria, Washington expressed concern over the persistent violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, urging the Nigerian authorities to take urgent steps to improve security.

“The United States strongly condemns the horrific killing of members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s family in Plateau State, Nigeria. The continued violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable populations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt is deeply alarming,” the mission said.

The U.S. government extended its condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected by the attack, while stressing the need for decisive action to prevent further violence.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected. As I discussed last week with Nigerian officials, we must do more to prevent violent acts like those yesterday. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and urgent action is needed to strengthen security and protect Christians and other vulnerable communities,” the statement added.

The U.S. Mission reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in tackling terrorism and violent extremism, saying it would continue working with the Nigerian government and other partners to improve security and protect citizens.

“The United States remains committed to working with the Nigerian government and our partners to combat terrorism, counter violent extremism, and ensure that Christians and all Nigerians can live and practice their faith freely without fear of violence or persecution,” it stated.

Rev. Dachomo, the regional leader of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, had disclosed that nine members of his family were killed in the attack.

The cleric, who has consistently spoken out against the killing of Christians in the region, also alleged that he has received death threats following the incident.

According to him, the threats were issued by members of a Fulani militia, whom he accused of carrying out the attack on his family.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in Plateau State and the wider Middle Belt, where recurring communal and sectarian violence has claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.
