The Nigeria Police Force has announced a restriction of movement across Osun State as part of measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly conduct of Saturday’s governorship election.

The restriction will take effect from 12:00 midnight on Friday, August 14, 2026, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Force said on Friday.

The police also warned the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, vigilante groups and other non-state security actors against participating in election-related security operations.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police said only security agencies established and recognised under the Constitution and laws of Nigeria are authorised to perform security and law-enforcement duties in connection with the election.

The Force stressed that no non-state security group, vigilante organisation or other unauthorised body would be permitted to assume the functions of constitutionally recognised security agencies.

It directed such groups to stay away from election security operations and refrain from activities capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or threatening public peace.

“Only persons and categories of movement specifically exempted by the appropriate authorities will be permitted during the period,” the statement said.

The police urged residents to comply with the restriction and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state.

Political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders were also advised to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly throughout the electoral process.

The Force warned against any act capable of triggering violence or disrupting the election, while assuring all political actors and eligible voters of its commitment to maintaining peace, security and a level playing field.

The police further urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding and report suspicious or unlawful activities promptly to constitutionally and legally recognised security agencies.

The restriction comes as voters across Osun State prepare to elect the next governor in an election expected to draw heightened security attention following reports of political violence and clashes during the campaign period.
