Senior leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and National Chairman, Senator David Mark, on Saturday attended the funeral service of the late mother of the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, in Ubima, Rivers State.

The funeral Mass for Dame Mary Orduah Amaechi, who died at the age of 89, was held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Ubima, with former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, and other dignitaries in attendance.

Amaechi and his wife, Dame Judith Amaechi, were joined by Atiku and his wife, Titi Atiku Abubakar, Osinbajo, Senator David Mark and other dignitaries at the funeral service to bid farewell to the deceased.

The ADC said the party leaders were at the ceremony to “pay their final respects and stand with the Amaechi family in their time of grief.”

Dame Mary Orduah Amaechi’s death was announced on July 16, 2026.

The burial came a day after presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso visited Amaechi’s residence in Port Harcourt to offer their condolences.

Obi, in a post on his X handle on Saturday, said he and Kwankwaso had on Friday paid a further condolence visit to Amaechi following the death of his mother.

He also disclosed that he attended the Vigil Mass held for the deceased.

Obi described the death of a parent as deeply painful, saying the Amaechi family could, however, draw comfort from the life of the deceased and the impact she made on her family, community and the Church.

He said Dame Mary lived “a good and fulfilling life,” leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, love and positive impact.

Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and those of all the faithful departed.
