Nigeria’s D’Tigress suffered a second consecutive defeat at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, falling 71-67 to Hungary in a Group B clash held in Berlin on Saturday.

The result marked a significant milestone for Hungary, who secured their first World Cup victory in 28 years, bouncing back impressively after having been thrashed 99-53 by France in their opening fixture.

Nigeria, meanwhile, entered the game looking to recover from an opening loss of their own, having gone down 99-81 to South Korea.

Hungary largely dictated the tempo throughout the contest, shooting with greater efficiency from the field and establishing an early foothold in the game.

Much of their offensive output came from a strong combined effort between Juhasz and Takacs-Kiss, who contributed 36 points between them, with the forward setting the tone early by posting an impressive 13 points and 11 rebounds in the opening half alone.

Although D’Tigress managed to claw their way back into contention at points during the game, Hungary consistently found ways to restore their cushion, holding a lead that hovered around double digits for large stretches of the second half.

The European side’s dominance was particularly evident inside the paint, where they outscored Nigeria significantly while also pulling down 38 defensive rebounds, effectively shutting down Nigeria’s chances of generating second-chance points.

The defeat is considered a notable upset given Nigeria’s higher world ranking, following a similar shock result earlier in the day when Mali stunned Spain. D’Tigress will now need to beat France on Monday to keep their knockout round hopes alive.
