Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has expressed regret after Nigeria suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), urging supporters to continue believing in the team despite the setback.

The defending African champions began their title defense on the wrong note as Malawi produced a spirited display to claim all three points in a thrilling Group C encounter.

Nigeria’s goals came from captain Rasheedat Ajibade and substitute Uchenna Kanu, but they were unable to prevent defeat against an inspired Malawian side.

Speaking after the match, Oshoala admitted the result was painful and acknowledged that the team had let Nigerian fans down.

She emphasized that the loss should serve as motivation for the players to improve in the remaining group-stage fixtures.

The experienced forward also noted that women’s football across Africa has become increasingly competitive, with more nations developing stronger squads capable of challenging traditional powerhouses.
