The Nigeria Football Federation has launched an investigation into the recent struggles of the country’s national teams, following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The decision comes after Nigeria’s disappointing campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Falcons exited the competition at the quarter-final stage before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the subsequent playoff for a place in the intercontinental playoffs.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

The setback has generated concerns over the direction of women’s football in the country and prompted the NFF to seek answers.

To investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent disappointments, the football body has constituted a five-member fact-finding committee.

Ambassador Fanny Amun will lead the panel, with former internationals Ladan Bosso, Desire Oparanozie and Mutiu Adepoju serving alongside Dr Alex Mana. Nasiru Jibril has been appointed as the committee’s secretary.

The panel is expected to examine the factors responsible for the national teams’ poor results and provide recommendations that could help improve Nigeria’s performance in future international competitions.

The NFF said the committee’s report will serve as a basis for measures designed to prevent similar setbacks.

For the Super Falcons, the immediate priority will be rebuilding after missing the World Cup for the first time, while the federation faces pressure to address the broader issues affecting Nigeria’s international football fortunes.
