On March 6, 2026, the headquarters of the Ghanaian battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under two missile attacks in southern Lebanon. The strikes occurred between 17:45 and 17:52 local time amid ongoing exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.

According to an official statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, two soldiers sustained critical injuries while a third suffered psychological trauma. The Officers’ Mess facility at the base was completely destroyed by fire following the impacts. The injured personnel received immediate treatment at a Level One medical bunker on site, with plans underway to transfer them to a UNIFIL referral hospital for advanced care.

The Ghanaian government responded swiftly by lodging a formal protest with the United Nations headquarters in New York, demanding a full, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident. Officials described the attack as unacceptable and emphasized the need to protect peacekeepers fulfilling Security Council mandated duties.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon confirmed that three peacekeepers were wounded during heavy firing near the base in the Al Qawzah area. UNIFIL stated it would investigate the circumstances and reminded all parties of their obligations under international law to safeguard UN personnel and property. Any deliberate targeting of peacekeepers represents a serious violation and may constitute a war crime.

This event highlights the growing risks faced by UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon as regional tensions continue to escalate. Ghana, a longstanding contributor to UNIFIL, has called for accountability to ensure the safety of its troops deployed in support of regional stability.
