The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has been reassigned by President John Dramani Mahama as the Minister for Defence.

His reassignment follows the death of former Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who was among eight people killed in a military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 7, and signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency also announced the nomination of Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology to replace the late Dr. Mohammed Murtala.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 78(1), submitted the names of the following to Parliament, through the Speaker, for prior approval as Ministers of State,” the statement read in part.

The President has also named Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, both subject to parliamentary approval.

As part of the reshuffle, Ahmed Ibrahim, who currently heads the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has been reassigned to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

The latest changes are expected to fill vacancies created by the deaths of senior government officials in the August 6 helicopter crash.
