Messi Is The Closest Player To Maradona – Alexis Mac Allister

By Okiki Oluwasegun

Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has described Lionel Messi as the only footballer capable of producing the kind of extraordinary performances once associated with the legendary Diego Maradona.

Speaking ahead of Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final showdown with England, the Liverpool star reflected on Maradona’s lasting influence on Argentine football and admitted that comparing modern players to the 1986 World Cup hero is almost impossible.

Mac Allister explained that Maradona remains an iconic figure in Argentina, with his achievements continuing to inspire the current generation of players.

According to him, watching old footage of the legendary captain reminds the squad of the standards he set, but only Messi has demonstrated the talent and creativity to come close to matching those unforgettable displays.

The 26-year-old noted that while the present Argentine squad draws motivation from the country’s football history, past triumphs alone will not determine the outcome against England.

He stressed that Gareth Southgate’s side possesses experienced players who are accustomed to performing under pressure in major international and club competitions.

Mac Allister also believes his experience in the English Premier League could prove valuable in Wednesday’s encounter. Having faced many of England’s players regularly with Liverpool, he is familiar with their physical style and competitive nature.

However, he suggested England have not displayed the same intensity they typically show in domestic football during this World Cup, possibly due to factors such as fatigue or weather conditions.

Despite acknowledging England’s quality, Mac Allister insisted Argentina remain confident in their playing style and have no intention of changing their approach as they bid to reach another World Cup final.
