Maduka Okoye has received a major boost ahead of Udinese’s first competitive fixture of the new season after being cleared to feature in the club’s Coppa Italia clash with Padova.

The Nigeria international had been a doubt for the early stages of the campaign after suffering a shoulder injury during Udinese’s pre-season preparations in Austria.

However, the 26-year-old has recovered sufficiently to resume full training and has now been declared available for selection.

Udinese manager Kosta Runjaic confirmed Okoye’s return while speaking to journalists before the Coppa Italia encounter.

The coach also revealed that new signing Unai Gomez is fit and ready to play.

Okoye’s availability could prove important for Udinese as they begin their competitive campaign, while also providing encouragement for Nigeria ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

The goalkeeper returned to the Super Eagles setup earlier this year after a lengthy absence, featuring for the full duration of Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Iran in March.

His return has added further competition to Nigeria’s goalkeeping department, with Stanley Nwabali also pushing for the starting position.

Nigeria will begin preparations for the next Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign later this year. The Super Eagles have been placed in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau.

For Okoye, the immediate priority will be regaining rhythm and helping Udinese progress in the Coppa Italia. His return from injury gives both club and country another reliable goalkeeping option as the new season gets underway.
