Life, in many respects, is like a mathematical equation designed by God for each individual to solve. Every human being is born with a unique assignment, but the greatest challenge is discovering the right formula to solve the equation successfully. The equation is already written; what remains is for each of us to understand it and work through it with wisdom, discipline, and perseverance. The ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras once said, “Numbers rule the universe.” Although he spoke from a mathematical perspective, the statement reminds us that life itself follows patterns, order, and consequences. Every action has a reaction, every decision has an outcome, and every choice shapes our destiny.

The first responsibility of every individual is to understand himself or herself. Before attempting to change the world, one must first discover who one is. This is not something that is necessarily attained through mystical experiences alone. It often comes through deep reflection, observation, learning, and the proper use of the intellect God has given us. The philosopher Socrates wisely advised, “Know thyself.” Those two words remain among the greatest principles for successful living. A person who understands his strengths, weaknesses, purpose, and values is less likely to become a victim of manipulation or exploitation.

This timeless lesson is beautifully illustrated in Wole Soyinka’s The Trials of Brother Jero, where Brother Jero exploits the ignorance, desperation, and blind faith of his followers. The play reminds us that people who fail to think critically often surrender control of their lives to others. Whenever I look at the palm of my hand, I do not see ordinary lines. I see symbols reminding me that every human being has a unique path and responsibility in life.

This brings to mind the Yoruba proverb:

“Àtẹ́wọ́ la bá ìlà ọ̀wọ́ ẹni.”

Literally, it means we look at the palm before noticing the lines.

Figuratively, it teaches that our destiny and individuality are inseparable from who we are. We must first understand ourselves before expecting others to understand us. As I reflect on life, I have come to realise that our greatest enemies are rarely outside us. The most dangerous battles are fought within.

These internal enemies include:

Pride, which blinds us to correction.

Envy, which prevents us from appreciating our blessings.

Jealousy, which turns another person’s success into our sorrow.

Impatience, which makes us abandon the process before the reward.

Greed, which destroys contentment and integrity.

Hatred, which poisons the heart more than the person being hated.

Arrogance, which closes the door to learning.

Laziness, which buries talents that could transform lives.

Dishonesty, which destroys trust and reputation.

The American author Napoleon Hill wrote, “The starting point of all achievement is desire.” However, desire alone is not enough. It must be accompanied by discipline, integrity, patience, and continuous learning.

Similarly, Nelson Mandela reminded humanity that “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” Success is therefore not a destination but a continuous journey of growth.

The Holy Bible also provides timeless guidance:

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7

Our thoughts shape our actions, our actions form our habits, and our habits eventually determine our destiny.

Likewise, the Qur’an declares:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” (Qur’an 13:11)

This profound verse teaches that lasting transformation begins from within. No society can progress unless individuals first reform their own character. Ultimately, the reality of life is not determined by luck, wealth, family background, or connections alone. It is determined by how well we solve the equation that God has placed before us. Every challenge is a question; every decision is a calculation; every action is part of the solution. The earlier we recognise that our greatest obstacles often lie within ourselves rather than around us, the smoother our journey through life will become. May we all find the wisdom to discover our purpose, the courage to overcome our inner enemies, and the grace to solve the divine equation of our existence.
