The Karate Federation of Nigeria has approved plans to establish a domestic Nigerian Karate League as part of efforts to strengthen the sport and create more competitive opportunities for athletes across the country.

The decision was reached during the federation’s first board meeting under President Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa, held in Abuja on August 13.

The meeting also produced a new administrative structure, with several committees and commissions created to oversee key areas of the federation’s activities.

Among the appointments, Florrie Omueti was named to lead the Marketing, Sponsorship, Partnership and Finance Committee, while Zainab Saleh will head the Organising, Competition and Welfare Committee.

James Aina was appointed Chairman of the Technical Committee, with Olusegun Akinola taking charge of the Nigeria Karate Referee Commission.

The board also approved the establishment of bodies including the Nigeria Para-Karate Commission, Nigeria University Karate Association and Nigeria Karate Coaches Association. Amakiri Oruamabo was appointed chairman of the Nigerian Karate League Commission.

In another decision, Dave Jegede’s suspension was lifted and he was appointed Technical Director. Ohis Asein was also named Head of Media.

The federation approved Nigeria’s participation in the UFAK African Championship in Algeria from September 6 to 13 and endorsed a year-long activity calendar covering August 2026 to August 2027.

The board also approved preparations for the Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Championship and called for greater unity, accountability and professionalism within Nigerian karate.
