The Iranian national football team will not participate in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This significant development was confirmed by Ahmad Donyamali, the nation’s Sports Minister, who cited the escalating military and political tensions involving the United States and Israel as the primary reason for the decision.

Minister Donyamali stated during a televised address that current circumstances make it impossible for the squad to compete. He pointed to recent military actions and the loss of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as the catalysts for this withdrawal. The Minister emphasized that the ongoing conflict has resulted in substantial domestic casualties, leading the government to conclude that international sporting participation is currently unfeasible.

Tournament Impact and Logistics

The 2026 World Cup is a historic event cohosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran had secured its position in the tournament after an impressive performance where they finished at the top of Group A in the Asian qualifiers. The team was scheduled to compete in a group alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with matches set to take place in the American cities of Los Angeles and Seattle.

Iran’s Scheduled Group Stage
Group Opponents: Belgium, Egypt, New Zealand
Host Cities: Los Angeles, Seattle
Qualification Status: Top of Asian Group A

Diplomatic Efforts and FIFA Response

The withdrawal comes despite high level diplomatic efforts to ensure Iran’s participation. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently indicated that he had received personal assurances from United States President Donald Trump regarding the safety and welcome of the Iranian delegation. Infantino has frequently maintained that football should act as a unifying force during periods of global instability.

However, Iranian officials remain firm in their stance that the security climate is too volatile for the team to travel to North America. FIFA has yet to announce how they will fill the vacancy left by Iran or which nation will be invited to join the tournament lineup as a replacement.
