The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched a major GH¢190 million redevelopment project at Burma Camp aimed at replacing aging military barracks with modern residential and office facilities to improve the welfare of service personnel.

The redevelopment, which is expected to be completed within nine months, comprises three major projects—the El-Wak Redevelopment Project, the Post Office Redevelopment Project and the Burma Camp Redevelopment Project. Together, the initiatives are intended to reduce the military’s housing deficit while providing improved accommodation and modern infrastructure for personnel.

At the El-Wak site, where 18 residential blocks currently accommodate 180 families, the existing structures—many of which date back to the era of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah—will be demolished and replaced with modern apartment blocks.

The new development will feature two-bedroom half-compound apartments comprising two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, sanitary facilities and an entrance foyer. Each block will contain eight apartments. It will also include one-bedroom studio apartments equipped with a kitchenette, living area and washroom, with each block accommodating 32 units.

Upon completion, the El-Wak redevelopment will provide 192 housing units, slightly increasing accommodation capacity from the current 180 family units. The project is being undertaken by Belamos Construction Company Limited.

The Post Office Redevelopment Project, which will be executed by HMS Construction Limited, involves the construction of a two-storey multi-purpose commercial and office complex opposite Ecobank at Burma Camp.

The ground floor will accommodate two banking halls, each with customer service areas, vaults, managers’ offices and other supporting facilities. The upper floor will house the relocated post office, a foreign exchange bureau, travel and tour offices, as well as additional office space for commercial rental.

Military authorities say the new facility will replace the ageing post office building while enhancing the appearance of the Command Gate enclave.

The largest component of the redevelopment will take place within Burma Camp itself, where 18 residential blocks currently house only 36 families.

The new development will include deluxe studio apartments featuring living areas, bedrooms, kitchens, storerooms and sanitary facilities, alongside three-storey two-bedroom apartment blocks. Each apartment will comprise two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, sanitary facilities and an entrance foyer, with each block accommodating 12 apartments.

Once completed, the project will deliver 248 family housing units, replacing the existing 36 and increasing accommodation capacity by nearly 600 per cent.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony last Thursday, Deputy Minister for Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi described the redevelopment as a significant investment in the welfare of military personnel.

He said members of the Ghana Armed Forces who dedicate their lives to safeguarding the country deserve quality accommodation that reflects their service and sacrifices.

Mr Genfi added that beyond improving living conditions, the redevelopment of Burma Camp and other military barracks would preserve an important part of Ghana’s military heritage while upgrading infrastructure to meet current and future operational requirements.
