D’Tigress Silence China in World Cup Preparation Clash

By Okiki Oluwasegun

D’Tigress bounced back strongly against China, securing an 88-77 victory in their third and final meeting in Foshan, Guangdong Province, as preparations for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup continue.

Nigeria came into the encounter seeking a response after losing their previous two games against the Asian side.

They made their intentions clear from the opening minutes, taking a commanding 32-17 lead in the first quarter.

Their dominance continued in the second period, with the African champions heading into halftime 58-29 ahead.

China returned with greater intensity after the break and reduced the deficit during the third quarter. However, Nigeria remained composed and carried a 71-52 advantage into the final period.

Although the hosts improved their performance late in the game, D’Tigress maintained enough control to complete a 12-point victory.

The result gave Nigeria revenge for their earlier losses in the series, having fallen 69-65 on Sunday and 70-67 in the opening game.

The victory represents another important step in Nigeria’s preparations for the World Cup. D’Tigress will continue their training programme in Tenerife, Spain, where they are scheduled to face Spain and Belgium between August 15 and 24.

They will then move to Zaragoza for their final preparation phase, featuring matches against Mali and Puerto Rico.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, from September 4 to 13. Nigeria will compete in Group B alongside South Korea, Hungary and France.
