Award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician Rev. Obaapa Christy has questioned the growing trend of having individuals arrested or threatened with legal action for performing songs originally recorded by other artistes.

Speaking in an interview with Nii Noi on Hitz FM’s Hitz Praise Zone, the celebrated gospel singer reflected on the early years of her music career, revealing that she began her journey by singing songs composed by other gospel musicians without facing any form of intimidation or legal action.

According to her, performing songs by established gospel artistes helped her develop her ministry and musical career, adding that no one cautioned or attempted to have her arrested for doing so.

“Do you always have to have people arrested for singing your song?” she asked, while expressing concern over the increasing number of disputes involving the performance of copyrighted music.

Rev. Obaapa Christy noted that the music industry has changed significantly over the years, particularly with the rise of social media, where videos of people singing and performing songs can spread rapidly across different platforms.

She disclosed that she frequently comes across videos of people singing her own songs on social media but has never been bothered about it.

Instead of seeing such performances as a problem, the gospel musician believes they serve a greater purpose by spreading the message in her songs while also increasing the reach of her music.

According to her, God may be using those individuals as instruments to bless others through the songs He has inspired her to produce.

She added that every time someone sings her music, it could also introduce her work to new audiences, ultimately promoting her ministry and expanding the impact of her gospel message.
