Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Samuel Nana Brew-Butler has backed Carlos Queiroz to extend his stay as head coach of the Black Stars, citing his performance with the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His comments come amid reports that the country’s football governing body is considering extending the contract of the 73-year-old after guiding the senior national team to the knockout phase of the 2026 World Cup.

The former Egypt and Colombia boss was appointed on a short-term deal in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the former GFA boss praised Queiroz for the progress made by the Black Stars despite his limited time in charge.

According to him, the veteran coach has improved the team’s performances at the World Cup and deserves the opportunity to continue leading the Black Stars.

“Although Carlos Queiroz did not have enough time to prepare the team, we still saw signs of improvement. I believe he deserves the chance to continue,” Brew-Butler said.

Despite the team failing to advance past the Round of 32, the GFA and the Sports Ministry believe Carlos Queiroz has brought improved discipline, tactical organisation and a clear playing style to the national team during his short tenure.

If confirmed, Queiroz’s immediate task will be to guide Ghana through the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to begin in September.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group C of the qualifying group alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia.
