The African Union (AU) Commission has expressed condolences to the governments and people of Spain and France following devastating wildfires that have killed people, displaced communities and destroyed property and the environment.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the continental body stands in solidarity with the two European countries as they respond to the impact of the disasters.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, the AU said the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events highlight the urgent need for stronger global cooperation to tackle the climate crisis.

“The Chairperson expresses his profound sorrow at the devastating wildfires affecting parts of Spain and France, which have claimed lives, displaced communities and caused extensive destruction to property and the environment,” the statement read in part.

The AU Commission extended its condolences to families who have lost loved ones and conveyed its support to the governments and citizens of Spain and France during the difficult period.

The Chairperson further stressed the importance of collective action, stronger climate resilience measures and increased support for vulnerable countries and communities affected by climate-related disasters.

“He reiterates the importance of collective action, strengthened climate resilience, scaled-up adaptation measures and the fulfillment of international commitments on climate finance, technology transfer and capacity-building, particularly for the most vulnerable countries and communities,” the statement read.
