Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has challenged claims that the proposed GH¢1 million payment to each Ghana Premier League club is the highest financial support teams in the competition have ever received.

The GFA has introduced a new financial and incentive package for the 2026/27 season, with each of the 18 Premier League clubs set to receive GH¢1 million before the campaign begins.

However, Afriyie says the figure does not represent a record level of financial support for clubs.

“It is a blatant lie to say the GH¢1 million is the highest a GPL side has ever received,” he told Sporty FM.

The former GFA executive pointed to the league’s previous sponsorship agreement with telecommunications company Glo, saying clubs received more when sponsorship and television rights were combined.

“Glo was $120,000 per club. It was 60-60 in Glo’s first year, and we had TV rights of $40,000, so the total amount for each club at that time was $160,000,” he said.

Afriyie said the money came from commercial sponsorship and broadcasting arrangements, rather than government funding.

He explained that the value of the Glo deal was later reduced after the company experienced operational difficulties in Ghana.

“It was when GLO paid for the first two years; the third year was when they struggled, and they negotiated to get a reduction because they were not fully operational in the country yet.”

Afriyie also questioned the basis for describing the new GH¢1 million package, which he estimated at about $90,000, as the largest payment ever made to a Premier League club.

“So for anybody to say that having received the GH¢1 million, equivalent to, let’s say, $90,000, is the highest ever paid is not factually correct,” he added.

He stressed that the previous financial package was generated through commercial agreements and should therefore be distinguished from the current support.

“That was only sponsorship money and not state money,” he concluded.

The GFA’s new financial structure is part of a wider package aimed at providing greater support and incentives for clubs ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The new Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on 5 September.
